"'Well it's a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be-will be utterly submerged. It's all scientific stuff: it's been proved". This connects to Racial segregation, Immigration to the US in the 1900-1920 and The Harlem Renaissance. It links to racial segregation because Tom wants the races to be segregated because he feels that his race is losing power. It also links to Immigration to the US in the 1900-1920's because that was when thousands of immigrants from other country's were coming to America through Eilis island in New York so it could be effecting Tom more because of his living in New York. The Harlem Renaissance links to this because Harlem is in New York and Tom might feel that his state is being taken over.
Chapter 2
"My Dear" she cried, "I'm going to give you this dress as soon as I'm through with it. I've got to get another one tomorrow. I'm going to make a list of all the things I've got to get. A massage and a wave, and a collar for the dog, and one of those cute little ash-trays where you touch a spring, and a wreath with a black silk bow for mother's grave that'll last all summer. I got to write down a list so I won't forget all the things I got to do." This Links to Materialism because Mrs. Wilson is obviously with Tom because of his money and wants to make sure that she remembers to buy all these things in case Tom leaves her.
